السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته Ustadh i have a question, if christians or jews slaughter meat do they have to say "In the Name of God" before slaughtering so that it is Halal for us Muslims to eat and what if they say "In the Name of Jesus" and what if they just dont say anything?

Ustadh AbdulAziz al-Haqqan
It says in Fatāwā al-Lajnah ad-Dā’imah (22/387): > “The basis for the permissibility of eating from the slaughtered animals of the People of the Book is the statement of Allah, the Exalted: {…and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you} [al-Mā’idah: 5]. Ibn ʿAbbās explained ‘food’ here to mean their slaughtered animals, and this is one of the two interpretations of the verse. If a person from the People of the Book slaughters an animal, then if we know that he mentioned the name of Allah over it, it is permissible to eat it. If we know that he mentioned the name of other than Allah, it is not permissible to eat it—because of the general meaning of Allah’s saying: {And do not eat of that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, for indeed, it is grave disobedience} [al-Anʿām: 121], and His saying regarding the prohibited things: {and those animals sacrificed on stone alters to other than Allah} [al-Mā’idah: 3]. But if we do not know—whether the name of Allah was mentioned, or the name of another—then the default ruling concerning their slaughtered animals is permissibility.”
