Assalamu Alaikum Ustadh, I’m afraid I may unintentionally be cutting off family ties. Could you please explain in detail who is included in maintaining family ties? if only way to contact a relative involves something haram, what is the best permissible way to maintain ties? JazakAllah Khair.

Imam Ibn Baz did not fix a limit but ranked them by nearness, the nearer the more binding. If the only way to reach a relative involves something forbidden then you do not enter into it, you keep the tie by a message, a call, or word passed through someone else.
