I used to get a fade haircut, but stopped for couple of years because of ruling then I still got a fade, but just not shaving. The part of the head only shortening it now I’ve heard that this is not allowed either.? Should I just say shorten my hair more on the side and keep the top length longer

Yes stay away as sh Aziz Farhan explained. If y want to trim do so just don't make a part obvious from another.
