In Al Aqeedatul waasitiyyah shaykh al Islam makes an analogy of Allah’s closeness with the closeness of the moon. An Ashari said this is an example of ta’weel, so why do salafis have a problem with Asharis doing ta’weel. What is the response to this?

The example of the moon is not tawil, it explains what maiyyah means in the language, that being with a thing does not require being in its place, and Allah Jalla wa Ala is above His Throne and with His creation in the way that befits Him. The tawil that is rejected is turning a word away from its apparent meaning to a hidden one without evidence, and here the apparent meaning is the one intended and it was never turned away from.
