You are not taken to account for a thought that passes and that you hate, for Allah pardoned this Ummah for what their souls whisper as long as they do not act on it or speak it (al-Bukhari), and the Companions complained of the same and were told that this is plain faith (Muslim). Shaykh Ibn Uthaymin drew the line at a thought a person settles on and believes, not one that comes and is refused, and the treatment he gives is to seek refuge in Allah and stop, not to argue with it.
