I live in the west and I know movies are haram due to music/uncovered women. But my family say that outside on the streets there are uncovered women, and it isn't haram to go outside. Also there is music at restaurants. They say the reason they watch movies isn't for the intention of music/women?

Ustadh AbdulAziz al-Haqqan
Movies are judged by what they contain. If a film contains music and uncovered women, it is forbidden to watch, because you are choosing to sit and look at and listen to what is haram. The comparison to the street is not correct. Outside, a person cannot prevent that women are present, so he is only required to lower his gaze from the first unintended glance, and there is no sin in what he did not seek out. But a movie is something you deliberately choose to watch from beginning to end, so it is a chosen and repeated looking and listening, and saying "I do not watch it for the music or the women" does not make the forbidden content in it permissible. Leave these films and replace them with what is beneficial, or with clean entertainment that is not built on all of this, in sha' Allah.
