The hadith is agreed upon (al-Bukhārī and Muslim): a man asked the Prophet ﷺ who is most deserving of his good companionship, and he ﷺ answered, your mother, then your mother, then your mother, then your father. The people of knowledge, among them Imam Ibn Baz raḥimahullāh, explained that this means the mother is given three times the share of the father in kindness, gentle treatment, and good companionship (husn al-suhba and birr), because of the greater hardship she bore in carrying you, giving birth to you, nursing you, and raising you. It does not mean the father is set aside or belittled, for he comes directly after her and his right upon you is great. So the precedence the hadith establishes is in kindness and devoted care, not a call to lower the standing of the father.
