I wanted to use SOK match, but parents are against it and prefer traditional family-arranged matches in our Arab community. I was born/raised in a different country, decreasing compatibility with my community. I know marriage is my right, but I don't want to go against my family. What do you advise?

Ustadh AbdulAziz al-Haqqan
The scholars state that what counts in marriage is religion and character, and that if a proposed spouse has deen and good character, difference of country or community does not harm the match. They also state that marriage is the right of the person, so if parents refuse a specific choice for worldly reasons or custom rather than a Shariʿah reason, obeying them in that is not obligatory, since the choice of spouse is the person's right, not the parents'. At the same time, kindness to parents remains due: the scholars say a person should be gentle with them, bear with them, and try his best to persuade them with wisdom. So there is no contradiction between your right to marry and your duty to your parents, and the way out is to join the two with wisdom.
