Are we allowed to call our father in law is father/dad ? The hadith mentions not to attribute our lineage to another father knowingly, does it apply in this matter too ?

Don't fall into OCD. Just like when we see an older person we say "uncle," this doesn't mean that he's my father's brother. This is OCD, and you should tackle that problem first.
