The Imam Ibn Bāz, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: The best is that one prostrates upon the muṣallā — this is what is preferable: that he prostrates upon the muṣallā, not upon the turban, nor [anything else]; rather upon the muṣallā, whether it be a rug, a spread mat, pebbles, or sand. He prostrates along with the people upon the muṣallā. Yet were he to prostrate upon the edges of his turban, that does no harm; were he to place his forehead upon the edges of his turban, or his ghutrah, or a bisht, or other than that, it does no harm. But that he prostrates upon the muṣallā which the people are praying upon — or his muṣallā upon which he prays in his home — is better: he places his forehead and his nose directly upon the muṣallā.
