Do I have to verify if a zakah recipient is truly eligible when told they have debts? Must I inform them it’s zakah money? The person teaches locally and studied at Medina Uni. A brother recommended him, but I don’t know his financial situation personally although I have followed some of his lessons

Yes tell him it is zakat and if he is qawy muktasib, meaning he has the health and ability to work and earn and chooses not to then he is not worthy of zakah, if he is an ustadh he knows these things so u can tell him.
