Is learning a language other than Arabic (for fun) tashabbuh? I heard Sheikh Salah Al Fawzan say this falls under tashabbuh with a people. He also referenced Umar saying do not learn the language of the non-arabs (sahih) Also is all tashabbuh kufr, and to what extent does tashabbuh apply?

The fatwa of Imam Ibn Baz is: This has no basis: the saying “Whoever learns the language of non-Arabs has become corrupt” or “has perished” is incorrect—it has no foundation. Likewise, the phrase that has become widespread on people’s tongues: “Whoever learns the language of a people is safe from their deception” is not a hadith. However, it is permissible to learn the language of other peoples if there is a benefit in doing so—be it English, French, or any other language—when there is a need, whether for worldly or religious purposes. There is no harm in learning it for the sake of benefit, not out of desire for the language itself, but for a valid purpose: to obtain employment, to work in trade, or because it is needed for business. If one learns it in a manner that does not harm his religion or negatively affect his faith, then there is no objection to that in cases of necessity. The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed Zayd ibn Thabit to learn the language of the Jews due to the need for it.
