Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn (may Allah have mercy on him) said: > The diblah (wedding ring) is simply a ring that a man gives to his wife. Some people put it on the wife when they want to marry her or after the marriage. This custom was not known among us before. Shaykh al-Albānī (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned that it comes from the Christians: the priest in the church brings the couple and puts a ring on the woman’s little finger, then her ring finger, then her middle finger. I don’t know the exact way, but he said that it is taken from the Christians. So, no doubt it is better to leave it, so that we do not imitate others. Add to that: Some people even have certain beliefs about it. For example, the husband writes his name on the ring he gives his wife, and she writes her name on the ring he wears. They believe that as long as the husband has the ring with his wife’s name on it, and the wife has the ring with her husband’s name, there will be no separation between them. This belief is a type of shirk. It is one of the forms of tiwalah (a kind of charm used to make a woman loved by her husband and vice versa). For this reason, it is forbidden. So the diblah is now surrounded by two problems: 1. It originates from the Christians. 2. If the husband believes it is the bond between him and his wife, then this is a form of shirk. Therefore, we believe that leaving it is better. (Al-Liqa’ al-Shahri)
