May Allāh عزوجل reward you for benefitting us shaykh. I am traveling from America to Dubai. The flight is 13 hours. I am leaving 11:20AM EST and I will land 8PM local the next day. The times of 7 Salāt will pass by while I am in the air. How can I perform my Salāt? جزاك الله خيرا.

The fatwa of Imam Ibn Baz is: “It is obligatory upon the Muslim, if he is on an airplane or in the desert, to strive in determining the qiblah — either by asking those who have knowledge of it, or by observing the signs of the qiblah — so that he prays toward it with clarity. If he is unable to ascertain it, then he should exert his effort, make his best judgment regarding the direction of the qiblah, and pray toward it. That will suffice for him, even if it later becomes clear that he was mistaken, because he strove and had taqwā of Allah to the best of his ability. However, it is not permissible for him to pray an obligatory prayer on the airplane or in the desert without making such an effort. If he does so, then he must repeat the prayer, since he did not fear Allah to the best of his ability and did not strive. As for the questioner praying while seated, there is no harm in that if he was unable to pray standing — just as in the case of someone praying on a ship or a boat when he is incapable of standing. The proof for this is Allah’s statement: ‘So fear Allah as much as you are able’ [al-Taghābun: 16]. If, however, he delays the prayer until after he disembarks, then there is no problem with that, provided that the time for the prayer is still open.”
