السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته جزاك الله خيرا I saw a clip of someone giving salam to our Sheikh ibn Uthaymeen and then asking a question & the sheikh answered that it is not from the sunnah to give salam and then ask. As the sahaba asked directly. Is this applied here too generally online?

You can give salam here, but maybe the sheikh means that because the person is already sitting with the sheikh so how does he say salam while he has been sitting with him all along.
