اَلْسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ Ustadh, what is the correct form of this Istighfar? Astaghfirullāha ‘l-'Aẓīm alladhi lā ilāha illā huwa ‘l-ḥayyul-Qayyūm wa atūbu ilayh. I was told that the word Azim should not be used because it is not part of the Hadith. Is this true? Should we recite with or without Azim?

Ustadh AbdulAziz al-Haqqan
Imam Ibn Baz said: “Yes, there is nothing wrong. There is nothing wrong if a worshipper says: Astaghfirullāh (I seek Allah’s forgiveness) as many times as the number of the heavens, the number of all things; I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him as many times as whatever has been and whatever will be. All of this is permissible. And he may also say: Astaghfirullāh al-ʿAẓīm (I seek forgiveness from Allah, Al-ʿAẓīm – The Magnificent), the One besides Whom there is no deity, Al-Ḥayy (The Ever-Living), Al-Qayyūm (The Self-Sustaining), and I repent to Him. All of that is good. It is like in the case of glorification (tasbīḥ): Subḥānallāh (Glory be to Allah) as numerous as His creation; Subḥānallāh to the satisfaction of His Self; Subḥānallāh to the weight of His Throne. When the Prophet ﷺ entered upon Juwayriyyah – may Allah be pleased with her – and she had remained in her place from dawn until forenoon, he said: ‘Have you been sitting here the whole time?’ She replied: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘I have recited four phrases three times after you left, and if they were weighed against all that you have said today, they would outweigh them: Subḥānallāh al-ʿAẓīm wa bi-ḥamdih (Glory be to Allah, Al-ʿAẓīm – The Magnificent, and praise be to Him), as numerous as His creation; Subḥānallāh to the satisfaction of His Self; Subḥānallāh to the weight of His Throne; Subḥānallāh to the ink of His words.’”
