I work in the meat processing business in Canada. Is it permissible to buy raw cow hides from slaughterhouses that are not halal? Basically buying raw hides from ميتة (mayta). We purchase these raw cow hides not to eat but to salt them and then send them to get tanned to be used for leather products

Imam Ibn Bāz said: It has been authentically reported in sound ḥadīths from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that the hide of a dead animal becomes purified through tanning. Once it is tanned, it is purified. It is confirmed in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim — may Allah have mercy on him — from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet ﷺ said: “If the hide is tanned, it becomes pure.” The scholars of language said that ihāb refers to the skin of a dead animal — specifically one whose meat is lawful to eat. So, if a person takes the skin of a dead cow, sheep, or camel and tans it, then it becomes pure and may be used for both dry and wet substances. This is the correct view.
