Ahsan Allahu Ilaykum, a sister asked: “I will receive $6,225 Canadian soon from my tribe. How do I know if it reached the Niṣāb & how do I pay Zakah on this? Must I also pay it immediately when I receive it or do I wait a year? And must I include other money that I have in the bank?”

Nothing is due on receiving it. Check it against the value of about 85 grams of gold. Your other money counts toward the nisab. This gift has its own Hijri year from the day you receive it, then 2.5% is due if you still hold it, and you may pay it early together with your other money when that money’s year completes.
