What is a tahqeeq?

Tahqiq of a book is editing it carefully: comparing its manuscripts and correcting their errors, so that its title, its author and its text come out as close as possible to what the author left. The one who does it is called the muhaqqiq. Also, sometimes they look for the authenticity of the reports and include them.
