I used to be against AI due to its environmental impact and other principles. However, in the academy I see its khair and how it can benefit us tremendously. Still, I feel uncomfortable/guilty about using it myself. What is the islamic view on using such tools known to damage the environment?

Using AI for what is permissible is allowed. Imam Ibn Baz said that beneficial new industries are something sought, and that they become forbidden only through being used in what Allah has forbidden.
