What exactly constitutes persistence (israr) in a minor sin such that it becomes major? Is there a specific threshold based on duration, repetition, or intention to continue? Can one prolonged lapse count as persistence? What if someone sincerely repents but later falls again? جزاك الله خيرا

Staying on a sin without quitting it is persistence, as al-Qurṭubī defined it. Whoever sincerely repents and then falls again has not committed a major sin, and Imam Ibn Baz said each sincere repentance wipes out the sin before it.
